- Negotiating Turbulent Times Together
In the midst of this global economic meltdown we're now in, Kaye Shackford, author of Charting A Wiser Course: How Aviation Can Address the Human Side of Change, suggests that most aviation companies haven't even touched one very large element of the cost of doing business. She then defines why we must, and how we can, change how we do what we do with one another to negotiate turbulent times together.

Friday March 5, 2010GE Aviation and Air India announced an agreement under which the airline will provide MRO services on the GEnx-1B with technical support and training from the engine-maker. AI has 27 GEnx-1B-powered 787s on order with delivery expected to begin next year. "Air India envisages a state-of-the-art facility catering to GE90 and GEnx engines, including a new engine test facility," Chairman and MD Arvind Jadhav said.
Friday March 5, 2010Delta TechOps expanded its maintenance agreement with Sun Country Airlines to cover APU and component MRO services. Deal covers APUs on nine 737NGs for five years and extends an existing inventory supply and service contract covering SY's entire 737NG fleet through 2018.
Friday March 5, 2010TRAX USA said Gulf Air has signed up for the e3 version of its TRAX Maintenance software.
More than 1,000 Air Canada mechanics to be cut this spring
Wednesday March 3, 2010Air Canada said more than 1,000 mechanics who perform MRO work on its aircraft via Aveos Fleet Performance, formerly Air Canada Technical Services, will be laid off owing to reduced utilization of its A320 family aircraft resulting in lower MRO demand. Machinists based in Montreal, Winnipeg and Vancouver will be affected, with 470 dropped in April followed by an additional 540 in June. AC said that as many as 815 could be recalled later. International Assn. of Machinists and Aerospace Workers said AC rejected a government-sponsored workshare program that would have mitigated the number of layoffs. "Air Canada is not willing to administrate the [workshare] program," the union's AC unit said. "This program would have lessened the blow to our members and the company simply doesn't care."
Tuesday March 2, 2010Aerostructures Middle East Services, a joint venture between Air France Industries, KLM Engineering & Maintenance and Aircelle (ATWOnline, June 18, 2009), yesterday inaugurated a 2,200-sq.-m. nacelle repair facility in Dubai's Jebel Ali Free Zone. AMES will focus on fan thrust reversers but also will have MRO capability on air inlets, cowl doors and nozzles. Trent 700 work already has started and AMES is preparing to launch CFM56 maintenance this month. Facility comprises 16 workstations, eight of which can handle "large" engines such as those powering the A380 or 777.
Chromalloy announced a contract with Pakistan International Airlines under which it will provide six sets of BELAC high-pressure turbine blades as well as component repairs for its CFM56-3 and CF6-80C2 engines and a two-year contract with Air India under which it will perform MRO on PW4000, CF6-80C2 and CFM56-7B engines and APUs. AI deal is valued at around $10 million, Chromalloy said. The company also reached a three-year, $2 million service agreement with Jordan Airmotive for inspections and service on gas turbine engine components.
Monday March 1, 2010Safran reported a €376 million ($509.3 million) profit in 2009, up 47% from the €256 million posted the prior year, on a 1.2% lift in revenue to €10.45 billion. Its Aerospace Propulsion segment posted a 2.2% fall in turnover to €5.67 billion. It participated in the delivery of 1,263 CFM56 engines, compared to 1,268 in 2008, and took 795 orders. The segment's operating income rose 7.5% to €628 million. The Aircraft Equipment segment, which includes Labinal, Messier-Bugatti and Messier Services, reported a €73 million operating profit, up 21.7%.
Monday March 1, 2010Pratt & Whitney announced a multiyear fleet technical management agreement with Singapore Airlines Cargo under which Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines & Global Services will provide powerplant engineering and on-wing fleet management for SIAC's PW4000s.
Wednesday February 24, 2010Austrian Airlines is moving forward with the delayed restructuring of its maintenance operation and plans to cut 210 positions--a quarter of its Vienna MRO workforce--a spokesperson told the Austrian Press Agency. OS no longer will serve third-party customers, with that work being transferred to Lufthansa Technik or other affiliated providers. The layoffs are part of Austrian's effort to reduce the number of employees to 6,000 by year end (ATWOnline, Sept. 28, 2009). It is unclear if it will continue to operate its maintenance bases in Innsbruck, where it works on Dash 8s, and Bratislava, where it handles F70s and F100s. The VIE layoffs are scheduled to begin March 1.
