Hiring and training pilots: New regulations considered in aftermath of Colgan Q400 crash

The investigation into the February crash of a Colgan Air Q400 in Buffalo that killed 50 people has cast a harsh light on pilot screening and training, leading both the US Congress and FAA to consider revising regulations, particularly in regard to regional airlines that fly an increasing percentage of US mainline carriers' domestic routes. The Air Line Pilots Assn. last week released a white paper on the issue, arguing that "many pilots in the current pool of applicants lack the level of experience that generations of pilots ahead of them had when they came into the airlines."

Spatial Composite Solutions of Dubai received a $2.6 million order from Oman Air for two cabin evacuation trainers (one A330-300 and one 737NG). Delivery is expected in October.

CAE sold a 777-300ER 7000 Series full flight simulator to Turkish Airlines for delivery this year. THY also signed up for the Simfinity integrated procedures trainer for the 737NG. In addition, CAE sold a 737-800 7000 Series FFS to Skymark Airlines that will be delivered to Skymark's Tokyo Haneda base by year end and an E-170/190 7000 Series FFS to Gulf Aviation Academy, which switched its order from an A330/A340 simulator. GAA will take delivery this year at its Bahrain facility.

Pinnacle swings to 2009 profit, reiterates Colgan Q400 pilots properly trained

Pinnacle Airlines and Colgan Air parent Pinnacle Airlines Corp. reported net income of $41.9 million for 2009, turned around from an $11 million loss in 2008 when special charges dragged on the bottom line. [more]

AirBaltic took over facilities and equipment at Riga International formerly belonging to Oxford Aviation Academy and is establishing airBaltic Training, which President and CEO Bertolt Flick said "is crucial to meet the growing needs of airBaltic and to generate additional revenue by providing flight crew training services to other airlines." The airline operates 10 737-500s, eight 737-300s, two 757-200s and 11 F50s and plans to open at least nine new routes from Riga in 2010 (ATW's Airports Today, February 2010). According to OAA, the Riga facility houses one 737-300 FFS, a multipurpose crew trainer for evacuation and fire training, 737 and F50 door trainers and seven classrooms.

Lufthansa readies for May A380 delivery

Lufthansa is scheduled to take delivery of its first A380 on May 10 and plans to operate it on select scheduled flights from Frankfurt to Munich and Hamburg in order to familiarize crew and airport staff with the aircraft, while also generating publicity. It will be used for training in Leipzig as well. LH also reportedly is considering using the plane to transport the German national team to the World Cup in South Africa. The tournament begins June 11. Long-haul scheduled services, starting with FRA-New York JFK, will commence once the second A380 arrives in early summer.

Oxford Aviation Academy was chosen by LOT Polish Airlines as that carrier's "preferred training provider" for pilot and cabin crew training on 767 and 737 Classic aircraft for the next three years. Training will be performed at OAA's Stockholm Arlanda center.

CAE announced the sale of A320 and A330 CAE 7000 series full flight simulators to China Eastern Airlines subsidiary Shanghai Eastern Flight Training. Simulators are valued at C$30 million ($29.2 million) at list prices and will be delivered in 2011. SEFT currently operates six CAE FFSs: Four A320s, one A330/A340 and one 737. CAE said it also has received the cancellation of an unidentified simulator order placed last year.

FlightSafety International will open a learning center in Johannesburg and begin training pilots and technicians working on Q300, Dash 8 and Beechcraft 1900 aircraft in March. SIM AeroTraining of France will manage the facility and maintain the training devices.
